With the recent announcement of Twitter accepting Elon Musks bid to purchase the service, there's been quite a bit of an exodus from the service, and an uptick in a similar service called Mastodon.
I've had an account on the SDF instance for a few years. Not used it much, but I do like it, and since this announcement have been using it more as this influx of users is making things pretty interesting.
The thing that makes it cool is that it's not centralized -- a multitude of instances exist, running the software on their own servers and forming their own communities. They are all still, however, interlinked, in such a way that anyone on one instance can follow anyone on another instance; some draw an analogy to each person living in a particular apartment building, but everyone still being able to visit anyon anywhere else.
As mentioned above, I chose SDF as my instance, since, while I'm far from as skilled with *nix and other such subjects as the average user, I certainly feel both welcomed and among peers who will respect eachother and actually work to be friendly, as opposed to clamor for social media clout.
If you want to join me there I do have an invite link.

Of course, you may want to hunt for you own instance, or, if you do join SDF and don't like it you can always change without losing anything. It's kind of wild how it all works together, and I think many of us who like BBSing also would enjoy this service.
