Nobody's posted here yet so I might as well say something. I dunno what to say, so I guess I'll leave my Xbox Live Tag here: StayPuft#3900 or StayPuft3900

Reason why I wrote it twice is because of Microsoft's new, Discord-like tag system. Not sure how one adds friends with this new system.

I don't have XBL Gold right now, but I'll get it soon. I just have to wait to get paid again.

As for what I've been playing, I've been playing a lot of Destiny and Lego Star Wars. I dunno, they're just good comfort games to me. You know like how we have comfort food. Good ways to depressurize over the weekend or after work.

Anyway, I figured I'd get something started on this board here. Feel free to message me or send a friend request with the Gamertag above. Or even respond to what games you've been playing if you have an Xbox. It'd be cool to hear about!

Sure hope the 360 will support the new system, otherwise I'm outta
    luck...

Also, speaking of Xbox Live, did anyone else hear about the ongoing (third-party, so not Microsoft naturally) project to recreate the
original Xbox Live for the first Xbox? They're still undergoing a
closed beta with folks like MVG and a few others. The basic premise is
that they run a custom DNS server that you point the Xbox to, and it
pretends to be MS servers from back in the day. They're mostly trying
to figure out the encryption and the differences in protocols between
games right now, and I think it's a rather neat concept once it comes
    to fruition.

I certainly have heard of the Insignia project. I even check the Discord server from time to time if there's any major updates. Not too many last time I checked, but I'm still excited!

As for the 360 compatibility thing, this new Gamertag system is compatible with 360 games. It honestly kinda has to be, otherwise online 360 games like older Call of Duty games and GTA IV wouldn't function right. Not to mention achievements, leaderboards, etc.

Given the way Microsoft has discontinued things in the past (looking at
you between 2012 and 2018, Skype for Linux), it doesn't really. I've
learned the hard way that anything from Microsoft doesn't have to stay
up to date, and can become useless on a dime.

It is. Or, more correctly, the Xbox 360 software doesn't care. Live service is abstracted from the systems, in a sense, on the 360, One, and Series X/S systems -- it wasn't on the original Xbox, and was baked into the games and the console. That's actually part of why the original version of XBL was killed in 2010 - the new experience they were working on was not what the original Live code put into Xbox software was built for, and thus they had to abandon it when the "new" experience came about.

XBL is it's own thing, agnostic to the hardware when you really look at it -- hence why it exists on Windows so happily as well. If the "new" gamertag system were to have an issue on the 360 that would have happened the second they flipped the switch.

Also, from my understanding any legacy names are still just as they are -- they weren't changed, only new ones being created follow the "new" format, which is still just a variation on the old one -- just one the Xbox One and Series X/S operating systems are aware of and treat slightly special.

As for a re-creation of the original XBL, that's neat. I'd love to see that mature. May look that up later, if I find time today.
